Recommend a Book

OK - I think I'll put this thread up. Kind of like the "Rate the last Movie you saw" thread, only just list stuff you've read- a brief synopsis and what you made of it. Dunno how many of you get time to read, anyhow - but I figure I'd best put it up anyways.

Devil May Care (Sebastien Faulks) - 8/10

James Bond is back with a new author! I really enjoed the book, as I can really see it becoming the next Bond film. It has a freakish bad guy, an abornmal henchman and a contraption made by the bad guy, which looks pretty cool. Definitely worth a read for any Bond fan, thats for sure - and any casual reader should enjoy this as its really easy to get into.

I recently bought Mrs L a 5 book series by a guy called Brian Lumley called "The Necroscope" series.

Kind of odd to explain, it's part horror, part psychic powers, part secret organisation protecting against foreign powers, part vampire, part alien......ish. It needs to be read really but well worth it as very well written and highly addictive.

My other recommendation for today is David Gemmell. Unfortunately the guy isn't with us any more but one of the best sci-fi / fantasy authors ever.

I'd recommend starting with "Legend".

Sounds interesting... May give it a whirl. At the moment, though I've just ordred the first of the "Dresden Files" series, which is about a Modern Day wizard surviving in Chicago(I think) using his powers just to earn a living. Mostly its to help with criminal investigations as a consultant. They made a TV series about it and it was on Sky ages ago and I absolutely loved it, but I think I was one of the few who did as there is no hint at a sequel at all .

I have recently read the Odd Thomas books again and would recommend them all Starting with the book "Odd Thomas" about a boy who is sort of psychic (in that he's always being drawn towards trouble), can see the dead and can see these other things he has named bodachs. Where there are bodachs, there will be violence! and the town he lives in has just started filling with them. He doesn't know whats going to happen but knows that a lot of innocent people are going to die in the next few hours. "Odd" and His girlfriend "Stormy" and the ghost of Elvis set out to solve the puzzle.
All in all I don't like Dean Koontz books but these were just funny and different, even though you've probably heard all of the cliche's before it was a good read and a series of books I enjoyed a great deal.

I watched the Dresden files and agree, cracking series.

Which title are you talking about ICHI....we've had a few.

Recently finished a Koontz Odd Thomas where he's in the monastry. Bit long-winded in places but good humour in it

My missus loves the Brian Lumley books! I've not read any, but she reads and re-reads them.
She's also reading all the Dresden books again too!
I liked the show, as did she, but she tells me the books are much better.
I need to start reading again. I used to read loads on the underground, or the bus, but now I've moved out of London I've found reading and driving is against the law (fascists).

Bloody hell! She reads the Odd Thomas books too.

I was talking about all of them although the Blurb is about the first one. The one in the Monistary is the 3rd book "Brother Odd" and I really did enjoy it but by then I had gotten so used to the characters I maybe appreciated it more. The second book I think is the weakest but if you get through it then the next 2 are brilliant reads

Go for Lumley Frag.....odd but so good.

And try out Legend everyone. Some of the best and most graphically written fight scenes ever (single combat and great big gallumphing battles)

I might try Lumley out. IS it best to read them in order, or should I try a certain one, to see what I think.
I have read a lot of Lovecraft, and I know there's vague Mythos links, so I'm not totally unprepared.

Start with the series I mentioned above and definitely do them in order.

The story really unfolds in some peculiar directions from book to book. Mrs L pissed herself off last night. She's on book 2 and read the backs of 3 and 4 and it gave some pretty hefty side-plots away.

Shadow Over Innsmouth is one of the best books ever! Period! See it made me bleed it was that good!
